Camp Meetings

General Jones Camp meets the 1st Wednesday of each month at the Washington County Public Library at 7:30 P.M. in Abingdon, Virginia.

Membership

The William E. Grumble Jones camp 850 is a patriotic, historical, and educational organization, founded in 1896, dedicated to honoring the sacrifices of the Confederate soldier and sailor, and to preserving the Southern Culture.  We are a constituent unit of the national Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) and therefore adhere to SCV criteria regarding hereditary membership.  Applicants without qualified ancestors, but who support the SCV’s mission, may qualify as “Associate Members.”  In either case, the William E. Grumble Jones Camp does not knowingly accept applicants with a racist or subversive political agenda.  All eligible applicants are encouraged to pursue membership in our camp.  Contact the camp officers for more information.

In brief, membership is open to all male descendants of any veteran who served honorably in the Confederate armed forces.  Ancestry may be lateral or collateral, as long as a blood connection exists between the applicant and the Confederate Veteran ancestor.  Applicants under 18 years of age require the permission of their parent or guardian to join.  The minimum age for membership is 12.

Proof of kinship can take many forms. The easiest method is to contact the archives of the state from which your veteran fought and obtain a copy of the veteran's military service record. All southern states' archives have microfilm records of the soldiers who fought for their state. All sons of Confederate Camps have a designated member who will be willing to help you with your search.

Instructions

All new members to the William E. Grumble Jones Camp #850 must complete the following:

1.  All applicants must complete in full the official SCV membership application from the SCV’s Heritage of Honor brochure.  To get one, either contact one of our officers or click on the link and print it out.

2.  All applicants must complete in full the lineage chart from the William E. Grumble Jones Camp #850 Confederate Descendant Lineage Chart.  Click on the link to print one out.

3.  All applicants must submit a copy of their ancestor's proof of Confederate service, i.e. copy of muster roll, pension record, UCV roster, etc., as documentation for membership.  You are requested to submit only one proof of service record, said document being the most original source possible.  All copies should be reduced to standard 8½ by 11 paper size.  Applicants needing copies of their ancestor's service record, may obtain them promptly via the SCV's special arrangement with Broadfoot Publishing Company.

Transfer Applicants: The William E. Grumble Jones Camp accepts transfers from other SCV camps.  Transfer applicants will need to complete an official “SCV Transfer Application” form and obtain the required approval signature of your demitting camp’s Adjutant and complete the Confederate Descendant Lineage Chart.

All of the above must be submitted in duplicate so that an original set may be submitted to SCV Headquarters and the William E. Grumble Jones Camp may retain a copy set.  All applications must include a check or money order for $35.00 (annual dues 1st year, $30 each year there after) made payable to the William E. Grumble Jones Camp 850.

Completed applications (all forms, documentation, fees, etc.) should be brought to a camp meeting or mailed to
